Unfortunately, writing an analytical commentary is all-too-often overcomplicated by teachers. The truth is that writing a strong analytical commentary is simple. Don’t get me wrong — it’s challenging, but simple. I use a 4-step formula with my students that, when combined with a solid foundation of metalanguage, turns what once seemed unclear into something surprisingly straightforward and applicable.

Similar to the AC, the essay is unnecessarily overcomplicated. I’m here to tell you it can be simple. Again, it’s a formula — one that I have refined and mastered over years of study and tuition. The formula goes a little something like this: writing expression + metalanguage + language examples + linguist quotes = strong essay. I tackle each of these constituent parts one by one with my students, then combine them together into a high-scoring response that is easily replicable across the breadth of essay topics VCAA may present you with.
